EU Supports Vietnam’s Fight Against Illegal Fishing, EU Ambassador Affirms
The European Union (EU) continues to assist Vietnam in combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, a partnership underscored by EU Ambassador Julien Guerrier. Since the EU issued a “yellow card” to Vietnam in 2017 as a warning for non-compliance with fishing regulations, Vietnam has made significant improvements. These include implementing stricter laws, enhancing tracking systems, and improving monitoring to curb violations. Despite these efforts, challenges like illegal fishing in foreign waters and unregistered vessels persist.
The EU remains closely involved in monitoring Vietnam’s progress. An upcoming inspection will assess whether Vietnam’s corrective actions are sufficient to lift the “yellow card” status. Ambassador Guerrier emphasized the importance of sustainable fishing practices to protect marine ecosystems and maintain Vietnam’s access to European seafood markets. Continued cooperation between the EU and Vietnam aims to ensure responsible fisheries management and align with international standards.
